Built for Comfort. Made to Last. Built in Britain.
At Vintage Sofa Makers, we design and build our own furniture properly.
Since 1985, we’ve moved from sourcing original vintage sofas and armchairs to developing our own designs — built the right way for modern homes. Every piece is handmade to order in Britain using solid hardwood frames and traditional upholstery methods.
We continually refine our designs for comfort, proportion, and durability. British-made sofas and armchairs built to last.

Frequently asked questions
Every piece is handmade to order in our British workshop using solid hardwood frames and traditional upholstery methods. Our frame makers and upholsterers build each sofa and armchair properly, the way it has been done for decades.
Keeping production here in the UK supports British craftsmanship and reduces unnecessary transport compared to overseas manufacturing.
We use kiln- or air-dried solid beech or birch hardwood for our frames and feet. Strong, stable timber is the starting point of any well-built handmade sofa or armchair.
Seat cushions are built with a quality foam core wrapped in fibre. They’re supportive rather than soft and designed to hold their shape with everyday use. Back cushions use pocketed fibre to give consistent support and help them keep their structure over time.
For upholstery, we use European hides tanned in Italy, including semi-aniline natural leather options, authentic Harris Tweed® hand-woven in the Outer Hebrides, and premium sheepskin. All materials are chosen for durability, comfort, and long-term use.
Every component we use is selected for quality and longevity — because a British-made sofa should still feel right years down the line.
Yes. Every sofa and armchair is handmade to order in our British workshop.
Building this way allows us to focus on the details of each piece and maintain consistent quality throughout. Typical lead times are shown on the product pages (usually 4–6 weeks). Once your order is in production, we’ll confirm your delivery window and keep you informed as it moves through the workshop.
Yes. Leather, fabric and Harris Tweed® swatches are available.
You can select up to six samples directly from the relevant product page, where the available finishes for each handmade sofa or armchair are listed. We recommend seeing the materials at home, as natural leather and woven fabrics can vary slightly in tone and texture.
We deliver across the UK mainland using a trusted two-person delivery team. They will bring your sofa or armchair into the room of your choice.
Please check the furniture carefully before signing the delivery note.
You’ll be offered delivery date options, a time slot, and live tracking on the day. If access is tight — narrow doorways, stairs, or awkward turns — let us know in advance and we can advise on the best way to manage delivery.
We build our furniture here in Britain using responsibly sourced beech and birch hardwood for our solid hardwood frames.
Our sofas and armchairs are designed for long-term use. Cushion interiors can be refilled or replaced over time, and frames are built for durability rather than short-term use.
We use natural materials wherever possible. Our distressed vintage leather is made from hides that are a by-product of the farming industry, and our premium sheepskin is also a by-product. Using these materials makes practical use of what already exists, rather than creating synthetic alternatives.
Building to order, using traditional upholstery methods, and producing locally all reduce unnecessary waste and long-distance shipping compared to imported furniture.
We focus on making furniture that lasts properly — which, in practical terms, is the most sustainable approach.
Yes. All of our sofas and armchairs comply with the UK Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations (BS 5852).
Every handmade sofa and armchair will carry the required fire regulation label to confirm compliance.
