Detailed Description

The Alfie is a wide Chesterfield armchair, handmade in Britain using the same practical upholstery methods we’ve relied on since the 1980s. It’s built properly, without shortcuts, and designed to sit somewhere between a traditional Chesterfield armchair and a compact sofa.

Each Alfie armchair is handmade to order in Britain on a solid hardwood frame. The frame gives the chair its weight and structure, keeping it supportive and square through years of everyday use. This is traditional upholstery work intended to last, not lightweight mass-produced furniture.

The back and arms are traditionally hand-buttoned using traditional techniques. The buttoning isn’t just decorative — it helps the upholstery wear evenly and keeps the shape crisp over time. The rolled arms and deep buttoned back give the Alfie its unmistakable Chesterfield look.

This is a deep-seated armchair with a wider seat than standard, giving you proper room to sit back comfortably without feeling low or awkward to get out of. It’s designed for everyday use — reading, stretching out, or simply wanting more space than a typical armchair provides.

The seat cushion is removable. It’s built with a supportive foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, designed to hold its shape and provide consistent comfort rather than softening or collapsing. If required in the future, the cushion can be rewrapped or replaced, which is part of building furniture meant to be kept.

The Alfie is upholstered in Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. This is a 100% natural, semi-aniline leather with visible grain, markings, scars, and variation in tone. Each chair will be slightly different. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character instead of becoming shiny or uniform. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

Finished with hand twin-stitched seams and neat piping, the Alfie is a British-made Chesterfield armchair designed to be repaired, re-covered, and lived with for decades rather than replaced.

Available in Tan, Brown, Black, Red, or Green distressed vintage leather. Handmade to order in Britain with a typical lead time of 4–6 weeks.

Sustainability

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.
