The buttoning across the Howard's back sits rounder and lower than a Chesterfield's, done the traditional way by hand rather than machine-pressed, so it holds its shape rather than sagging out over the years. Upholstery is our distressed vintage leather, a semi-aniline hide tanned in Italy from natural European cattle skins, hand-cut and fitted by our upholsterers so grain and colour vary slightly piece to piece. A breathable cotton pad sits beneath the cushions, letting the hide breathe rather than trapping heat and moisture underneath, part of why the leather lightens and softens with genuine use rather than wearing thin. Available in tan, brown, black, red or green, as a 2, 3 or 4-seater, and pairs with the matching Howard armchair for a full set. Frame construction is solid hardwood, built to order in Britain. A sofa at this price is worth thinking of as a long-term purchase rather than a five-year one, built to be recovered and repaired rather than replaced. Lead time is four to six weeks, backed by a 15-year frame guarantee.

• Clean stains with light warm soapy water and wash again with clean cold water. Pat dry or lightly with a hair dryer. Then buff up.
• Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent possible fading.
• Do not use abrasive and chemical materials such as sandpaper, alcohol, bleach for cleaning the surfaces.
• Protect from contact with sharp and hard objects.
• The leather can be cared for once a year, using a semi-analine cream added sparingly and buffed up.
