The Howie Button Back Sofa is a traditional British-made sofa built properly, without shortcuts. This is a design we’ve worked with for decades, and the proportions are kept true to the original Howard shape. It’s a handmade vintage style sofa intended for everyday use, not a decorative piece.

Each sofa is handmade to order in Britain on a solid hardwood frame. The frame gives the sofa its weight and rigidity, keeping it supportive and square through years of regular use. This is traditional upholstery work, built to last, not mass-produced imported furniture.

The backrest is traditionally hand-buttoned, providing upright support without feeling stiff. While the sofa is deep seated, it’s not designed to be slouched in. The depth allows you to sit back comfortably, but the proportions remain practical and easy to live with, which is what defines a proper Howard sofa.

The seat cushions are removable. Cushions are built with a supportive foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, designed to hold their shape and provide consistent comfort over time rather than softening or collapsing. The feel is supportive rather than soft, making the sofa suitable for everyday sitting.

The Howie sofa is upholstered in Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. This is a 100% natural, semi-aniline leather with visible grain, markings, and variation in tone. Each sofa will be slightly different. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character without becoming shiny or uniform. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

Finished with neat piping and turned hardwood legs, this British-made sofa is designed to be repairable and re-coverable over time, making it a long-term piece rather than something disposable.

Available in tan, brown, black, green, or red leather, and made as a 2 seater, 3 seater, or 4 seater sofa. Each piece is handmade to order in Britain with a typical lead time of 4–6 weeks.

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.

• Clean stains with light warm soapy water and wash again with clean cold water. Pat dry or lightly with a hair dryer. Then buff up.
• Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent possible fading.
• Do not use abrasive and chemical materials such as sandpaper, alcohol, bleach for cleaning the surfaces.
• Protect from contact with sharp and hard objects.
• The leather can be cared for once a year, using a semi-analine cream added sparingly and buffed up.
