Detailed Description

The Harriet is a straightforward, well-proportioned vintage style sofa. It’s the sort of shape that works in most rooms without trying too hard — soft scroll arms, a sensible back height, and proper seat depth so you can actually sit into it rather than perch on it.

This is a deep seated handmade sofa, designed for day-to-day use. The seat cushions are supportive rather than soft, which matters over time. They don’t collapse after a few months, and they don’t need constant plumping to stay presentable. You sit on it, not through it.

Inside, you’ve got a solid hardwood frame. That’s the foundation of the whole piece and what separates it from mass-produced imports. It gives the sofa its weight, stability, and lifespan. It’s built properly, and it stays that way.

The upholstery is where the Harriet really shows its character. This is a semi-aniline, 100% natural leather, tanned in Italy. It carries all the markings you’d expect — scars, creases, grain variation. Nothing is corrected or hidden. Each piece comes out slightly different, which is the point.

Over time, this leather will lighten rather than darken, especially on the arms and seat cushions where it’s used most. That wear isn’t damage — it’s what gives a vintage leather sofa its depth. Before it leaves the workshop, the leather is oiled and waxed to feed the hide and give it a level of protection from the start.

The seat and back cushions are removable, which makes a difference in real use. The cushion interiors are built with a foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, and where applicable they are pocketed to help them keep their shape over time. It’s a practical build, not a decorative one.

You’ll also notice the stitching. All visible seams are hand twin-stitched, not just for appearance but for strength where the leather takes the most strain.

Compared to imported sofas, which are often built for quick turnover, this is a British-made sofa designed to be kept, used, and repaired if needed. That’s the difference — it’s not just how it looks when it arrives, it’s how it holds up after years of use.

Sustainability

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.
