Detailed Description

The Batsby is a deep-seated leather sofa built for people who want proper comfort without giving up structure. It’s handmade to order in Britain using traditional upholstery methods and a solid hardwood frame, not mass-produced or imported.

The proportions are generous and lounge-friendly, with a deep seat and broad arms that give the sofa a grounded, stable feel. It’s designed for everyday living — sitting back, stretching out, and using the sofa properly rather than perching on the edge. Despite the depth, the sit remains supportive rather than soft or collapsing.

A defining feature of the Batsby is its detachable arm system. The arms are delivered separately and slot firmly into place on site, locking securely without tools. This makes the sofa far easier to deliver into homes with narrow doorways, tight staircases, or older layouts, while still feeling solid and secure once assembled. It’s a practical solution, not a gimmick, and one that doesn’t affect the long-term strength of the sofa.

Seat and back cushions are removable. Seat cushions are built with a supportive foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, designed to hold their shape and provide consistent comfort over time. The feel is supportive rather than soft, making the sofa suitable for everyday use without losing its form.

The Batsby is upholstered in Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. This is a 100% natural, semi-aniline leather with visible grain, markings, scars, and variation in tone. Each sofa will be individual. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character instead of becoming shiny or worn-looking. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

Finished with hand twin-stitched seams and neat piping, the Batsby is a British-made sofa designed to be repaired, re-covered, and kept in use for decades rather than replaced.

Available as a 2 seater, 3 seater, large 4 seater, or extra-large sofa. Each piece is handmade to order with a typical lead time of 4–6 weeks.

Sustainability

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.
