Detailed Description

The Chester handmade vintage leather Chesterfield sofa follows the proportions that made the traditional Chesterfield one of Britain’s most recognisable sofa designs.

It features the classic scroll arms running level with the back, a deep buttoned backrest, and a deep seated profile that allows you to properly sit back and relax rather than perch on the edge.

The back and arms are traditionally hand-buttoned using traditional techniques, which is what gives the Chesterfield its structure and long-term durability. Proper buttoning is not decorative — it pulls the upholstery tightly into the frame so the sofa holds its shape for years of everyday use.

Underneath the upholstery sits a solid hardwood frame, which forms the foundation of the sofa. A proper hardwood frame provides the weight, strength and stability expected from a British-made sofa, and is designed to last for decades rather than a few years.

This version of the Chester uses removable seat cushions, which give the sofa a slightly more relaxed appearance while still maintaining the structure of a traditional Chesterfield. The cushions are built with a foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, creating a seat that is supportive rather than soft, designed to hold its shape and remain comfortable for everyday use without collapsing.

The sofa is upholstered in distressed vintage leather, which is a semi-aniline 100% natural leather tanned in Italy. Because it is natural leather, you will see grain variation, scars and natural markings across the surface. These are not faults — they are the characteristics that make each piece unique.

Over time the leather lightens rather than darkens, gradually developing the sort of patina that vintage leather furniture is known for. Before delivery each sofa is oiled and waxed to nourish the hide and provide initial protection, ensuring the leather is ready for use in the home.

Unlike mass-produced imported furniture, every handmade sofa is made to order in Britain, allowing the upholstery to be properly fitted and the materials carefully selected. It’s the slower way of making furniture, but it’s the way these pieces have traditionally been built.

Sustainability

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.
