In the workshop, the back of an Earl takes longer than almost anything else we make. Each button is pulled through by hand, one at a time, and the leather is worked and eased into place rather than stapled flat, which is why the diamond pattern still looks crisp after years of use rather than sagging out of shape. The frame beneath is solid hardwood, jointed with traditional mortise and tenon methods rather than glued or stapled together, built to be sat on properly rather than treated carefully. Underneath the leather cushions sits a breathable cotton pad, so the hide isn't sealed against foam the way cheaper sofas are, which keeps it feeling cool rather than clammy and lets it age the way good leather should. Our distressed vintage leather is a semi-aniline hide tanned in Italy from natural European cattle skins, so the scars and grain marks on your sofa are genuinely its own, and the surface will lighten and soften with a few years of proper use rather than crack or wear thin. This is the sofa people end up sitting on rather than around, a family piece rather than something kept for best. Available in tan, brown, black, red or green, made to order in four to six weeks, and backed by a 15-year guarantee on the frame.

• Clean stains with light warm soapy water and wash again with clean cold water. Pat dry or lightly with a hair dryer. Then buff up.
• Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent possible fading.
• Do not use abrasive and chemical materials such as sandpaper, alcohol, bleach for cleaning the surfaces.
• Protect from contact with sharp and hard objects.
• The leather can be cared for once a year, using a semi-analine cream added sparingly and buffed up.

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement.
