Detailed Description

The Dane is a handmade British armchair that sits slightly outside the usual rules. While it takes its visual cues from mid-century club chairs — slim arms, clean lines and a lighter overall look — it’s built as a deep-seated club armchair, giving it a more relaxed, settled sit than traditional upright club designs.

Each Dane armchair is handmade to order in Britain on a solid hardwood frame. The frame gives the chair its weight and stability, keeping it supportive and square through years of everyday use. This is traditional upholstery work, built properly rather than designed for short-term use.

Despite its lighter appearance, the Dane is generous to sit in. The seat depth allows you to settle back comfortably, while the gently reclined loose back cushion supports you without forcing posture or encouraging a slouched position. It’s well suited to longer periods of sitting — reading, working, or unwinding — while still feeling controlled and supportive.

Both the seat and back cushions are removable. The seat cushion is built with a supportive foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, designed to hold its shape and provide consistent comfort over time rather than softening or collapsing. The overall feel remains supportive rather than soft.

The armchair is upholstered in Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. This is a 100% natural, semi-aniline leather with visible grain, markings and variation in tone. Each chair will be slightly different. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character instead of shine. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

Hand twin-stitched seams and neat piping give the Dane a crisp, tailored finish without making it decorative. The tapered hardwood legs lift the chair visually, reinforcing its mid-century influence while keeping the footprint practical for British homes.

Like all our UK-made furniture, the Dane is built to be kept. The frame and upholstery can be repaired, re-stuffed or fully reupholstered in the future, rather than replaced. It’s a straightforward, well-made armchair — modern in look, traditional in build, and designed for long-term use.

Sustainability

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.
