A guide from the people who make them

Choosing Your Armchair

Start With What It Is For

An armchair earns its place by how you use it. A reading chair needs good
support and a high back, a chair by the fire is for settling in with a cup of tea,
and a chair in a hall or bedroom may mainly be a place to sit for a moment.
Decide the job first and the right shape follows.

Choose Your Style

Wingback:

A high back with wings that frame the head and keep draughts away. Made for reading and for long evenings by the fire.

Club:

Deep, rounded and generous, a classic for the study or the sitting room.

Mid-Century and Retro:

Clean retro lines that sit well beside a Chesterfield, much like a contemporary extension added to an old house.

Loveseat:

Wide enough to share, without the footprint of a full sofa.

Check The Measurements That Matter

Width and depth decide whether a chair fits the room, and seat height and arm height decide whether it is comfortable to use. A higher seat and arms at a comfortable height make it easier to sit down and get up, so sit in a chair like the one you are considering before you decide.

Back Height And Support

A low back keeps a chair relaxed and casual, while a high back gives support for the shoulders and neck. If you read or sit for long periods, a higher back is worth considering.

Choose Your Material: Leather

Leather is hard-wearing and gets better with age, and our semi-aniline Distressed Vintage Leather keeps the natural character of the hide.

Choose Your Material: Harris Tweed

Harris Tweed is handwoven wool in a herringbone or a hunter check, warm in winter and breathable in summer.

Making It Work With Your Room

Choose an armchair that complements your sofa without matching it exactly. A common thread, such as a shared colour, material or era, ties different pieces together. A chair in a different material from your sofa adds interest, and a pair of chairs on either side of a fireplace gives a room balance.

Built To Last

Every armchair is made to order on a solid hardwood frame, cut and upholstered by hand in Lancashire. The frame is made in our workshop in Wales and carries a 15-year guarantee. General wear and tear is not included.
