Detailed Description

The Burlington is a compact handmade British armchair based on a traditional club chair design. It’s built for proper, everyday sitting rather than slouching, with an upright posture and supportive feel. This is a chair that works just as well for reading and conversation as it does for regular day-to-day use, without taking up unnecessary space.

Each Burlington armchair is handmade to order in Britain on a solid hardwood frame. The frame gives the chair its weight and stability, helping it remain supportive and square through years of regular use. This is traditional upholstery work, not lightweight or mass-produced furniture.

As a club chair, the Burlington is not deep seated. The seat depth and back angle are deliberately balanced to keep the sit upright and comfortable rather than relaxed or slouched. The scroll arms and gently arched back provide structure and support, making the chair feel settled without being stiff.

The seat cushion is removable and built with a supportive foam core wrapped with ultra silk fibre. This gives consistent comfort while helping the cushion keep its shape over time. The overall feel is supportive rather than soft.

The Burlington is upholstered in Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. This is a 100% natural, semi-aniline leather with visible grain, markings and variation in tone. Each chair will be slightly different. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character instead of shine. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

Twin stitching and neat piping are used throughout for strength and clean definition, reinforcing the shape without making the chair feel decorative or fussy.

Built in Britain and intended for long-term use, the Burlington is designed to be repaired, re-stuffed or re-upholstered in the future rather than replaced. It’s a straightforward, well-made vintage leather armchair that fits naturally into everyday British homes.

Sustainability

The leather used in our furniture is a by-product of the farming industry. Using the hide ensures more of the animal is used rather than wasted. Our sofas are made using traditional upholstery methods and solid hardwood frames, which prioritise repair and re-covering over replacement. By making each leather sofa to order in Britain, we reduce unnecessary transport and support long-established British furniture making & upholstery skills.
