The Berkley is a classic British wingback armchair, made the traditional way and built for everyday use rather than display. It combines Harris Tweed with distressed vintage leather, using materials that wear well and improve with age.

The high, winged back gives proper support through the shoulders and neck, making it a comfortable chair to sit in for long periods. The backrest is fully buttoned in a Chesterfield style, with each button pulled through by hand rather than stitched into panels. This keeps the shape tight and helps the upholstery settle evenly over time.

A distinctive V-shaped leather insert runs through the back, breaking up the tweed and giving the chair its character. The arms are traditionally scrolled and finished in distressed vintage leather, which is practical in the areas that take the most wear. Antique-style stud detailing follows the arm fronts and wings, fitted by hand.

The Harris Tweed is a natural wool cloth with visible texture and variation. Like all proper tweeds, it isn’t uniform or flat. Paired with the leather, it gives the chair a lived-in look from the start rather than something overly polished.

The leather used is a distressed, semi-aniline finish. You’ll see marks, grain variation and colour movement straight away. With use, the leather will lighten rather than darken, softening and wearing through on the high-contact areas, exactly as vintage leather should.

Traditional upholstery layers are used throughout, giving the Berkley a supportive but comfortable sit without the rigid feel of mass-produced armchairs. The hardwood used in the build is kiln or air dried depending on the season, allowing the timber to settle naturally before upholstery begins.

Each Berkley wingback armchair is handmade to order in Britain by experienced upholsterers, with a typical lead time of 4–6 weeks.
