Detailed Description

The Hugh Harris Tweed & Leather Armchair is a generously sized handmade British armchair designed for comfort first. It brings together two materials with long, proven histories in a shape that feels settled, relaxed and easy to live with rather than upright or formal.

The main body of the chair is upholstered in genuine Harris Tweed, handwoven from pure virgin wool in the Outer Hebrides. It’s a robust, breathable cloth with natural texture and variation, chosen for warmth and durability rather than uniform appearance. Leather is used on the arms and back, where wear is greatest, adding structure, protection and a clean contrast to the tweed.

This is a deep-seated armchair. The loose seat and back cushions allow you to sit back properly, making it comfortable for longer periods — reading, conversation or quiet evenings in. Despite the relaxed feel, the chair remains supportive rather than soft or slouched, with proportions that hold their shape over time.

Each armchair is handmade to order in Britain on a solid hardwood frame. The frame gives the chair its weight and stability, helping it stay supportive and square through years of everyday use. This is traditional upholstery, built properly rather than mass-produced or imported furniture.

The leather trim is Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. It’s 100% natural and semi-aniline, with visible grain, markings and variation in tone. Each chair will be slightly different. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character instead of shine. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

Traditional nailhead trim is used sparingly to enhance detail, following the natural lines of the frame and finishing the shape cleanly without making the chair feel decorative or fussy. It’s a practical, restrained detail that suits the overall form.

Like all our UK-made furniture, the Hugh armchair is built to be kept. The frame and upholstery can be re-stuffed, repaired or re-upholstered in the future, extending its life rather than replacing it. It’s a straightforward, well-made armchair designed for long-term use in real homes.
