Detailed Description

The Berkley is a classic British wingback armchair, made properly and intended for everyday use rather than display. It combines Harris Tweed with distressed vintage leather — two materials that wear well, age honestly, and suit a traditional wingback shape.

The high, winged back provides proper support through the shoulders and neck, making the Berkley a comfortable chair to sit in for long periods. Although the chair is deep seated, the proportions remain upright and supportive rather than laid back, which is exactly how a traditional wingback should feel.

The backrest is traditionally hand-buttoned in a Chesterfield style using traditional techniques. The buttoning isn’t just decorative — it helps the upholstery hold its shape and wear evenly over time, preventing the back from loosening or sagging with use.

A distinctive V-shaped leather insert runs through the backrest, breaking up the tweed and giving the chair its character without overpowering the overall shape. The arms are traditionally scrolled and upholstered in distressed vintage leather, which is practical in the areas that see the most wear. Nailhead trim is traditionally applied along the arm fronts and wings, to follow the natural lines of the frame.

The Harris Tweed used is a natural wool cloth with visible texture and variation. It is hand-woven in the Outer Hebrides and supplied with an authentication tag stitched to the furniture. Like all proper tweeds, it isn’t uniform or flat, and it wears well over years of regular use.

The leather is Italian-tanned distressed vintage leather. This is a 100% natural, semi-aniline leather with visible grain, markings, scars, and variation in tone. Each chair will be slightly different. Over time the leather softens and lightens rather than darkening, developing character instead of becoming shiny or uniform. All leather is oiled and waxed before delivery to nourish the hide and provide initial protection.

The seat cushion is removable, with a cover suitable for dry cleaning. It’s built with a supportive foam core wrapped in ultra silk fibre, designed to hold its shape and provide everyday comfort without collapsing. The overall feel is supportive rather than soft, in keeping with a traditional wingback chair.

Each Berkley wingback armchair is handmade to order in Britain with a typical lead time of 4–6 weeks.

By upholstering our furniture in Harris Tweed and making each piece in Britain, we support rural industries, skilled craftsmanship, and reduced transport compared to imported furniture.
